Rich Ryan’s HYROX training journey has included plenty of experimentation—some highly effective, some not so much.
Early on, longer HYROX tempo sessions helped build the durability needed to handle the full race. Later, higher-intensity and double-threshold training improved certain areas but also showed the downside of doing too much and recovering too little.
One of the biggest breakthroughs came from becoming more intentional with Zone 4 training and tracking how much quality work could be sustained during HYROX-style sessions. That approach helped improve race performance significantly and became a major part of the modern RMR training philosophy.
Now, the next step is less about doing more HYROX-specific work and more about improving the pieces that can raise overall performance—speed, strength, machine efficiency, and higher-intensity fitness.
The lesson is simple: the best training plan isn’t always the one that makes you feel most race-ready today. It’s the one that helps you become a better athlete tomorrow.
